19th Annual Ceremonial Review

On Saturday, May 31 the 140 Aurora Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets held their 19th Annual Ceremonial Review at the Aurora Community Center. This parade showcased the skills the cadets have acquired throughout the year.

Master of Ceremonies was Mr. Henry Shannon, well-known radio personality and avid pilot (now retired). Mr. Shannon has been our MC for several years, and is an honoured friend of the Squadron.

Thanks to everyone involved for another successful Annual Ceremonial Review.

19th Annual Awards Banquet

The 140 Squadron Air Cadets held their annual Awards Banquet entitled "Stars of the Future" at the Aurora Legion on Industrial Parkway in Aurora this year on Saturday May 3. During this special evening cadets were recognized for achievements within the Squadron for the current service year (September 2007 - May 2008). The night included a dinner, awards, speeches and a dance!

Spring Tag Weekend

April 25-27 proved to be another successful Tag Weekend for 140 Squadron. This event is used to raise money to help run the day-to-day activities of the squadron and to help fund special events held throughout the year.

The SSC would like to thank all cadets who participated in this event, all parents who volunteered during the 3 days of activities, all the businesses who gave permission for the cadets to tag on their premises and of course to the public, who kindly gave donations to our cadets tagging at the various business locations around Aurora.

Inter-Provincial Cadet Exchange (ICE) Visit

From March 27-31, 140 Squadron hosted the ICE trip for the 299 Mackenzie Royal Canadian Sea Cadets from Stony Plain, Alberta. Cadets spent their time visiting places of interest in the Toronto area - the CN Tower, Hockey Hall of Fame, Ontario Science Centre, the Toronto Aerospace Museum and the Air Combat Zone. Goodbye 299 Squadron - we hope you had a visit you will remember forever!

The 299 Mackenzie Royal Canadian Sea Cadets presented 140 Squadron with this ship as a token of appreciation for hosting their visit to Aurora.

Lottery Ticket Sales

Cadets were at the Upper Canada Mall again March 1 & 2 selling lottery tickets for the Air Cadet League of Canada's Ontario Provincial Committee. Special thanks to Chevalier Chrysler in Aurora, for use of their 2007 Dodge Caravan, and Upper Canada Mall for use of their facilities.

Zone Shoot Competition

The 140 marksmanship team attended their first Zone Shoot in a few years and all members had a good time. Each member of the marksmanship team had a personal best score during the course of the day, and all are looking forward to continuing their skills in future practices.

The members of this years marksmanship team include: FCpl Horton, FCpl Marshall, Cpl Douvinos, LAC Cook and LAC Chan. Congratulations!

Skating at Richmond Green

The squadron's annual trek to Richmond Green Skating Complex was slightly dampened by the rain, but several hard-core skaters showed up to enjoy the Sports Night activities on Tuesday, Jan 29.

TAG CTC 2007

Several cadets from 140 Squadron attended the Annual Toronto Air Group Christmas Training Course at Fort York during the winter break from Dec 26-31. FSgt C.Holowatyj was fortunate to be a Course Staff Cadet, acting as an Instructor for the Band Course. FCpl N. Piovesan and FCpl S. Suen participated in the Flying Scholarship Review Course and Cadet J. Suen attended the Basic Course. Congratulations to all cadets for successfully completing their courses.

Special Holiday CO's Parade

The Squadron held a special Holiday Celebration on Tuesday, Dec 18 at Cardinal Carter. The evening started with a special CO's parade which involved Capt Mobbs switching places with the squadron's youngest cadet - Ethan Scheffler. We then enjoyed listening to two guest speakers - Cpl Evan Moses,a member of the Canadian Armed Forces serving in the Military Police and 2Lt Jeremy Golding, currently training as an Armoured Officer.

Flying Students Visit Buttonville

'Introduction to Flying' students were treated to a morning at Buttonville Airport with LCol Ferguson Mobbs on Saturday, Dec 8. The cadets reviewed the terminal and airport procedures, booked 20 minutes each on the airport's Flight Simulator and visited the Meteorology Office where they received a full briefing including demonstrations on computer. This was followed with a preflight walkaround on a Cessna 172 giving the cadets the opportunity to gain practical experience with the aircraft.

Santa Claus Parades

140 Aurora Squadron Band together with 778 Banshee Squadron Band completed a succession of Santa Claus Parade performances the past few weekends. Headed by 2Lt Don Ellis-Mobbs and CI Hilts, these 2 bands showcased their musical talents marching and playing for many hours across the York Region.

2007 Remembrance Day Parade

140 Squadron participated in their annual march at the Aurora Remembrance Day Parade on November 11.

The squadron was well represented at the ceremony with our trumpeter F/Sgt Holowatyj, 2 flag persons: Cpl Douvinos and F/Cpl Cheung, 2 rifle guards: F/Cpl Bernhardt and F/Cpl Piovesan, and the whole 140 squadron. Capt Mobbs and F/Sgt Brisebois presented a wreath for the squadron.

2007 Quarterly Ceremonial Parade

The squadron held their 2nd Annual Quarterly Ceremonial Parade on November 6th. The head reviewing officer was LCOL Len Whines (Ret’d) and the guest speaker following the parade was Mr. Graham Kennedy.

CO's Parade and Promotions

October 3rd was the squadron's first CO's Parade and Promotion night for the new service year. Promotions included recruit to LAC, LAC to Corporal and Corporal to Flight Corporal. Corporal Bernhardt (our new Drum Major) had the priviledge of becoming the squadron's first Flight Corporal - a new position in the air cadet ranks. Congratulations to all cadets who received promotions.

Also during this evening, a special tribute was paid to Capt Lynda Holowatyj, who served with our squadron last year. We would like to thank Capt Holowatyj for all contributions she made to the squadron - especially with getting a high percentage of cadets into the 2007 Summer Training courses. Good luck in your new squadron - you will be missed!

Toronto Airways Open House

Cadets helped out with parking at the Toronto Airways Open House on Saturday, Sep 29. Thank you Lt Vachon and CI Waller for organizing this event.

Operation Manifold - Mission Complete!

Another successful start to the Cadet Service Year. This weekends events included a series of fundraising and citizenship initiatives including: the Fall Tag weekend; Magna Hoedown '07'; the Annual Terry Fox Run; and Legion Candle Light Vigil. These activities help raise money for 140 Aurora Squadron and also increase the cadet's level of involvement in our community.

Canoe Training at Sunset Beach

It was a picture perfect evening at Sunset Beach as the cadets enjoyed the warm water and 2 hours of canoe training. Capt Mobbs led the rescue sessions while senior cadets conducted the on-land training. It was a great opportunity for cadets to familiarize themselves with the basics of "flatwater" safety and proficiency.

The squadron would like to thank the armed forces for providing all the canoeing equipment for the evening and an extra big thanks to Capt Mobbs for driving all the way to Camp Borden to pickup and return everything!
